Solstice Interview:

  1. Tell us a little about  yourself.

Felicia Rogers, born and raised in the southern part of the United States, is a Christian wife and mother. She is just your average, ordinary woman, with a side interest– writing. For eleven years, every waking moment of her life was consumed with changing diapers, wiping noses, and kissing scrapes. But now that her children have grown and she enjoys a modicum of freedom, in addition to taking care of hearth and home, she writes! She enjoys adding a flavor of realism and humor to her all too real romance stories. For what is love without a little laughter?

 2.     Do you have a favorite character you have written?

Favorite character from my books and why, is probably one of the hardest questions I get asked.  I struggle to find an answer each time.  The reason I struggle is because each character in my books are unique.  And they each carry a small piece of myself or someone I know, only to the extreme, of course.  So I can’t really say that I have a ‘favorite’.  I generally like all of them.  Unless I’m just trying to create a character I don’t like!

 3.     What are you currently working on?

Currently I’m working on a chick lit book—I call it romantic comedy.  I’m also working on an inspirational historical and an inspirational contemporary.  My hope is to find an agent and be on every Wal-Mart shelf.  Lofty goals, high idea, but we all need a dream.

 4. How long have you been writing?  What influenced you to start?

About two years ago, I told my cousin I wanted to write a romance novel.  I’ve read romances in every genre for years.  At one time about five years ago, I’d tried to write one, but it never made it past the editing stage.  When I informed my cousin of my plan, she encouraged me.  Said it would be a joint effort.  I didn’t know at the time she would become unable to help me and I would be completely on my own. I went on to finish that manuscript and I sent it out to several agents and publishers but it never made it past the first stages.  Disgruntled and looking for new ways to get my work out there, I stumbled across a forum post for Solstice Publishing’s Celebrate the Season contest.  I was waiting to hear from a publisher on my manuscript at the time so I set all my other ideas aside and started work on a submission.  In two weeks I had written a novella of about 13,000 words and submitted it for the contest.  Now all I had to do was cross my fingers and wait.

Within a few weeks I discovered I was one of five winners and my novella was going to be published!  This gave me renewed hope that anything was possible.

 5.     How do your family/friends feel about your writing?

My children think it is cool that their mother is an author.  Some of my family is excited, while some of my family is still in the dark!  J

 6.     Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

Within the next five years, I hope to publish a four novel Inspirational series on Scotland.  I love the history and the language of the European people.  As well as the lessons we can learn from their sacrifices as Christians.

 7.     Do you have any advice for new or aspiring author?

Every time I’m asked to give advice to new or aspiring authors I always say the same thing, don’t give up!  Patience (although I have a limited supply of this) is the name of the game.

 8.     What is your favorite book? (one that you have read) and why?

My favorite book!  Are you kidding?  There are so many.  I guess my favorite story from childhood was Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White.  Mostly because it is the first novel I remember reading all the way through!  When I was a teen my father gave me over 200 Harlequin romance novels for Christmas.  I spent most days reading, sometimes consuming two novels a day!  I read so quickly I can’t remember the title of one novel I read! As for what I’ve read as an adult, I’ve read everything from Brock and Brodie Thoene’s historical series to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, enjoying them all.

 9.     On the fun side, what is your favorite television show and why?

I have several.  “Lie to Me”, “NCIS”, and “Biggest Loser”.  I love “Lie to Me” because of the main character’s accent and his over exaggerated swagger.  And, of course, the plots are interesting as well.  “NCIS” I like because of the mystery and the unveiled romantic tension between two of the characters.  “Biggest Loser” I love because the people on the show are motivating.  They prove that with enough hard work anything can be accomplished.  From losing weight to publishing a novel, hard work and persistence do pay off.

                                 Basic Interview Questions

 1.     Tell us a little about The Chosen, and  what inspired you to write The Chosen?

The Chosen is about a young dwarf, Halli, who finds out she’s a holy paladin with the power to heal people.  She is told this by Queen Laurali of the Elves when she comes to request Halli’s help in joining The Chosen, a group of warriors, on a quest to defeat Prince Gastle, the evil beast set on destroying their world of Phantasma.

 2.     Do you have a favorite character you have written?

Halli is definitely my favorite.  She’s a lot like me; shy but eager to fit in and make friends.  She’s got a big heart and loves her friends and family very much.

 3.     What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on the next book in “The Chosen” series.  Book 2 (no name yet) is about The Chosen going on yet another quest to find out what’s causing an imbalance of nature on their world and try to stop it.

 4.     How long have you been writing?  What influenced you to start?

I think I’ve been writing all of my life.  When I was in school, I loved working on my writing assignments and research papers.  When I went to college, I decided to major in journalism.  I freelance write web copy from home, and tried writing books too.  My first attempt was an adult romance novel, but it didn’t really go anywhere.  When I decided to try a YA fantasy, that clicked, and it’s what I write now.

 5.     How do your family/friends feel about your writing?

They are very supportive of my writing, and I’m grateful for that.  Too many times I hear writers complain about their family and friends telling them to get a real job.  Mine know it’s my job, and treat it as such.

 6.     Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

I hope to have more books in “The Chosen” series published, and I hope to have a wide range of readers waiting for the next one to come out.

 7.     Do you have any advice for new or aspiring author?

NEVER give up your dream.  When your dream finally comes true, keep working to keep it alive.

 8.     What is your favorite book? (one that you have read) and why?

“Summer’s End” by Danielle Steel.  I’ve read her books for almost 20 years now, and I love them all.  But there’s something about a summer romance that always gets me, and this one in particular had characters I really liked and admired.

 9.     On the fun side, what is your favorite television show and why?

I think it changes week to week, but for now I’d say “Grey’s Anatomy.”  I love medical shows, and this one has a great cast and characters who are very nutty.  I can relate to them.

 The Gifted

Available at Solstice Publishing

The truth of the matter is that we’re all thrust into situations that were couldn’t see ourselves in at some point. The choices that we make in these situations determine our fate. We can either come out better than we were to begin with, or we can be disadvantaged.

Sydney Harrison is thrust into such a situation, but in a way entirely different than we are. She is Gifted. Those that are Gifted hold a part in the grander scheme of things that normal humans have put down to the lengths of myth and legend. Now she, plus Matt Johnson (the insanely hot baseball player) and the gang have to work to keep the balance of reality and myth in check, before it’s too late.”

Interview with Gary Peterson:
The Old Miller Place
Available at: Solstice Publishing
http://www.solsticepublishing.com

1. Tell us a little about The Old Miller Place, what inspired you to write the novel?

This is a story set in the early 1960’s and involves an average family faced with some very difficult situations. They buy a haunted house where objects move by themselves and voices seem to come from nowhere. The hero, George Peabody, researches the old house’s history and learns of grizzly murders that had taken place there. In the process of doing this an attorney is bludgeoned to death and a murdered woman ends up in the back of his truck. He is placed on trial for both murders and it seems he will be found guilty. He is suddenly kidnapped by the real murderer and his detective friends, Gary Wise and Henry Thayer, search for clues to find him. You will need to read the book to learn who the real villain is and how it ends!
My inspiration for this novel stems back to when I was 17 years old, which was in the early 1960’s by the way. My family moved into an old farm house that everyone thought was haunted. Dark shadows frequently appeared on the walls from windows that were too small for the structure. The floors creaked when you walked on them and the doors groaned when opened. There was an old painting on the wall that we thought were the original owners. With my imagination running wild you can see how I came up with the floating salt shaker, footprints disappearing in the snow, and voices that came from nowhere. Since I love mysteries I also had to add a dead body or two.

2. Do you have a favorite character you have written?

My favorite character is George Peabody. He is average looking and not a superstar in any sense, but is above average in intelligence and uses his reasoning skills to solve murders. This is someone we can all relate to and a reminder that anyone can overcome difficult circumstances if he or she does not give up..

3. What are you currently working on?

I am working on a sequel called The Millpond Murder Case. George Peabody must match wits with a murderer who chops off the hands and feet of his victims and poses them by a millpond in the small town of Timber. It should be finished sometime this summer.

4. How long have you been writing? What influenced you to start?

I have used my writing skills all of my adult life to prepare work related reports. Since I’m getting close to retiring from my day position I decided to try something different and wrote a mystery novel. I found this to be a lot of fun and plan to continue doing this as a second career.

5. How do your family/friends feel about your writing?

Everyone is excited about my writing a novel and wants to read it as soon as it published. Most of them have asked me why I didn’t start doing this a long time ago.

6. Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

I plan to write a series of George Peabody mysteries and a lot of other short stories along the way. Hopefully, someone will recognize the quality of these stories and make a movie out of one of them. Later on, I plan to write a story about the adversity my mom faced trying to raise four children while caring for a dying husband.

7. Do you have any advice for new or aspiring author?

Write what you know and care about. Also, don’t guess when you are not sure of your facts. There’s a lot of good information on the internet and you can find most of your answers there.

8. What is your favorite book? (one that you have read) and why?
“I like the old classics; especially the old Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie books as they were popular when I was a kid. The language they used was particularly rich and colorful. Agatha Christie also would emphasize particular points by repeating key words in a unique way.”

9. On the fun side, what is your favorite television show and why?

I love the crime dramas mostly; CSI (whatever version), Hawaii 5”O”, Murder She Wrote, etc. Mostly I like to see how the hero uses his reasoning skills in solving the murder of the week.
